I am lucky enough to call Johanna Hehir my friend, I met her 7 years ago. Our children went to the same school and we live in the same pretty village. We have shared many good times and some awful ones too, Jo has always been a very dear friend to me.
Not only that I truly find her inspirational, she is a mother of four children and the most talent designer you will ever meet! She literally could design anything your heart desired.
I often find myself just popping down for a cup of tea just to get a glance of Jo working on her latest dress.... The piles of vintage French lace, the sewing machine humming.....

Johanna kindly agreed to me telling the world how much I love her and asking her a couple of personal questions.

Have you always wanted to be a designer Jo?......

Ever since i was a little girl, i loved looking at fairytale books and just loved all the pretty dresses the characters wore I used to daydream about making them and then wearing them. i also spent a lot of time making dolls clothes, i loved doing embroidery, knitting, crochet, patchwork any of those pretty things. I liked the sense of achievement when you could use something you have made yourself.

Who inspires you Jo ? .....

This is a hard one i have been reading about Gabrielle Chanel and looking at her early work, i also love vintage Dior i am also looking at Lanvin . if i was to look around me now to the people close to me who inspire me i would have to say my daughter Fianna who I think has had a sense of her own style since she was very little and this is what Mae the new label will be about. a very exciting project you will all hear more about very soon.

What advise would you give to a aspiring designer? .....

To someone going into the business i would say get out there and learn your trade learn about the fabrics, the machinery and the methods.

I live in a small, very normal 3 bed semi.... This is where I live with my 3 men and our dog Sid. Tilly the tortoise and I sometimes feel quite out numbered.

My little lounge........ My reading table belonged to my Great Auntie, my beautiful copy of Dottie Angel looks just dandy there too xxx

My little kitchen.......... Our kitchen table is very important to us! This is where we eat, do homework, chat to friends it also has to double up as a desk for me in the winter when it's too cold to work in my shed ! Xxx

Our little lounge...... We love our log fire and light it every night, nothing beats the smell of a Cosy fire.

This is where I love to be most of all, my little shed xx

I found this tiny wall hanging dresser with mini cups and saucers and knew it had to live in the shed x

Our Vintage Wedding Fair....

If you have not heard I am organising something very different with my friend Little Miss G x I honestly am so excited that Milton Keynes is going to meet all my friends ....

We are organising the first vintage wedding fair in MK ! I am going to show you a few of our exhibitors. Keep an eye on this little blog as I want to show you a few more very soon xx

I love my little bubble, it involves a lot of ice cream but it also involves a lot of meeting and networking with like-minded people.... I have met the most wonderful talented people and more than anything wanted to showcase all of their talents!

Lifestyle Salons will be there offering free tips and advice to brides..... They are also offering victory rolls for a fiver !!!! Oooh I'm first !!!!

Johanna-Hehir will be there in person!!! This is just too cool, Johanna is a top designer, we are truly honoured she has agreed to attend x

Poppy dresses another one of my favourites will be showcasing their bridesmaid dresses.... Just heavenly !

Magpie Crockery will also be at our fair showcasing their gorgeous crockery and vintage accessories xx sooo pretty

My lovely friends from Calico Moon will be showing off their babies..... Oooh how i love these so! X

During the winter months when I'm not out in Betty I work from home, I do a bit of this and a bit of that...
I do some Marketing for a few beautiful people and of course myself......
But as you know working from home is very difficult sometimes, I find myself easily distracted and the ipad calls my name.....
But my excuse for these wandering moments are 'I'm networking and I'm researching' I actually am!!!! xxx
Of course I often get swept away in a little day dream or too.

I have stumbled across some amazing women on my journey and this is one of them! I LOVE her!!

How did you start your business and why ? When ?

Before Violet was born I worked as an printmaker/artist but having 3 children including a young baby and my husband working in New York it was quite obvious that I couldn't carry on at that point there was no space in my head to focus & be creative in those little spare moments that I occasionally had to myself.

I also suffered with Post Natal Depression which completely floored me, I had no family nearby to help, husband was away and I just fell away into myself just trying to make it through each day. So I took solace in my sewing which has always been there for me, it was something I could almost do subconsciously, it became quite therapeutic, the hum of the machine, lines of stitches all sitting together to create something practical yet beautiful.

As I started to get back to normal I decided that I could carry on sewing on a small scale making unique accessories for people & their homes. I wanted to use a mix of vintage & new fabrics but it was important that I could reuse as much as possible & anything else was sourced locally or at least from other small businesses. There are only a couple of things I use now that I know are imported but otherwise it's pretty much home grown. I have a special place in my heart for Liberty & Sanderson prints….the backbone of British design in my opinion

What inspires you ? Or who ?

Anything British especially past times when we made some pretty amazing stuff, memories of my Grand Parents & their homes who were poles apart, Ted & Agnes lived in a grand seaside guesthouse which was ruled by a rod of iron & was full of the best of the best. Then there was Beatty my Nana gentle, kind, tireless in dealing with my bossy inquisitive ways, taught me to knit, gave me my first sewing machine & baked all sorts of interesting goodness. Her house was a kitschy delight with plastic flowers, teak furniture & a huge stash of wool under the stairs…I always wondered what happened to the huge sunburst clock that adorned the space above the gas fire.

I also find time a great inspiration...if I get a niggle about something, a need to change or make I usually just wait & it will come to me at the oddest of moments...i maybe walking down the stairs, hanging out the washing or doing some other mundane task which obviously has to be dropped right at that instant so that I can get on with it. It usually happens about 7.25pm on a Sunday evening when I am trying to get everything ready for the week ahead!.....

If you had a day off what do you love to do best of all ?

Sit on my front step, looking at the view, something in my hand (so I am making use of the time...:)) watching my chickens peck about the lawn, the bees up to their whatnot in front of the hive and obviously there will be glorious sunshine.....Obviously I don't get many perfect days off in North Yorkshire!

Apart from having my gorgeous boys and the very yummy mr scoops I am also lucky enough to own Betty my ice cream van which is probably how you are reading this little blog..... But just in case you didn't know there is a very special four legged little boy in our lives !!

Meet Little Sid.....

Sid age 7 weeks, we fell in love with this little pup!! We had no idea how much he was going to mean to us all ! X

So here he is our special boy! We went to collect Sid during February half term nearly 3 years ago...... We brought a little pup with oodles of energy but such a calm, sweet little nature! X We brought Sid home at 4.30pm and sadly said Goodbye to my mum and my boys said Goodbye to their Nanny at 9.30pm......
The little Sid was a real gift from heaven, that I know for sure xx

I just felt I ought to share this with you all.... Now I know we have a lot of handmade and vintage fairs around and sometimes I'm a bit disappointed when I go along. Maybe I go with very high hopes but this vintage fair is like no other!!!

It's organised by a magical lady called Carol who can find anything!

Just feast your eyes on her own stall!!!
From vintage clothes, pictures, toys and oodles of vintage fabric.....

So I'll show you which treasures went home with me... I just couldn't help myself! They were asking so nicely for a new home xx

The soda bottle and the picture were my loot!! Xx don't they just look fine and dandy in my little house!

The obsession with mustard continues.......
Now my friends found the flour jar quite amusing but it kept calling my name and I loved her so! £2 well spent I thought!! X

And of course I couldn't leave Sid out could I ? A new little place to rest, I thought this would look dandy in my shed! And a little water dish.....

My Little Story So Far...................

So you have stumbled accross my little blog... hopefully you may of seen my website http://www.vintagescoops.co.uk/

How did I arrive here....

Well my story has a very sad start!

My beautiful Mum aged 52 died from the vile Lung Cancer.... my Mum was truly beautiful, brave and strong.

My Mum died 3 years ago on the 17th February, 3 years sounds like a long time to to me it still feels like a blink of an eye.......

I cannot put into words how much it hurts, how huge the hole is in my heart xx

Out of the worst sadness I was given a gift... well actually a mad moment. The moment I bought an Ice Cream van. Now I have always been a dreamer longing to live in an episode of the Waltons or have the perfect family life like The Cosby Show... My Mum used to laugh and say I should of been American. I always found it super easy to LOVE everyone and everything! Well only for a short while, I am very whimsackle. My husband and boys are probably the only thing that never changes xx

I consider my mad moment a gift as I like to think my Mum played a part in it all....

I was lucky enough to win 'Country Homes New Country Business of The Year' another gift from my Mum I am sure!!!

My idea was to pootle around our local villages selling locally made Fresh Farm Ice Cream.... simple as that really. It was a project, something to focus on. I wanted to escape my sadness, I wanted to smile and laugh again, be me again!! I also allowed myself to fully emerge into my world, my bubble.. a place I felt safe x

A place where I could live out my dreams...... a place where I could pop on my prettiest floral frock, pop a flower in my hair and be care free.

I gave myself an hour off this morning to go hunting....

And oh my giddy aunt I found the most perfect catch!!! xxx

They had my name on them..... waiting for me to pick them out from all the others lined up waiting to be re-homed xx

I am obsessed with mustard this week, I have barely taken my vintage mustard scarf off, I've worn it in my hair, on my neck even tied to my bag!! xx

I am also loving my not so vintage but oh so lovely beads from Joules ...

I fell in love with her and then found out she had created a fabulous book....

It arrived today... I actually nearly kissed Mr Postie!!

Look how beautifully it was wrapped!

Underneath the wrapping ... oh my goodness! There is it the most beautiful book you have ever seen!

There was also two squares of vintage fabric, a patch of lace, a button and a square of Dottie thread! xx

The book is an unusual size and the paper feels divine... the corners of the book are rounded.. somehow all these little touches make it feel very quirky and precious xx

I actually don't ever think that I have ever been so excited about a book....

I have met some wonderful people on Twitter too many to mention but I am going to try and start blogging about them all. There is just too much talent out there and I really want to share it with you all.

My first blog in yonks should really be about the day Betty and I met up with some wonderful Tweeters and had the most beautiful Photoshoot.

It all begin when I started Tweeting with the amazing beautifully talented florist Steph from Fairy Nuff Flowers...

Steph brought a car load of beautiful creative people to my sleepy little village and we had the most delightful day eating ice cream, looking at beautiful flowers.... what more could you dream of ??
Steph brought along a very talented photographer called Catherine from LILYAndFRANK, a fabulous talented make up artist called Katy from MAKEUPBYKATY.COM and a brilliant hair stylist called CAS from LOVEYOURHAIR.CASSANDRA.COM

The day started early at my kitchen table, now I just love my kitchen table and could rattle on about this for hours. I really do love it, it's 7ft long and cost £35. We eat, chat, work, here..it really is at the centre of our family life.

It was so cool to see Betty in print today!!!!
I am still pinching myself that we won, We won 'Run Your Own Country Business of the Year' the prize was £6000 worth of PR and marketing. The new website http://www.vintagescoops.co.uk/ was part of our super prize.
I really cannot tell you how much I miss my lovely Mum who sadly passed away last year. I know she would of loved this and she would of been laughing and she would of had a little drive of Betty!!!

Whilst in Hope Cove, Devon on our family holiday I found this little gem of a book at the Boat House Sale.... It is so funny and I love it!!!

It tells us how to apply make-up to hide a big nose and which hair cut suits your face shape.....such fab pictures.

The book is called Home Management 1969

Oh how lovely, we have had two weeks in sunny devon and I have found real treasure!!! A vintage LIBERTY dress just perfect for a little face lift and then I will be wearing it on the van!!!

Well Hello there.been a while!!!
I have been so busy. We have had the most exciting last few weeks x x
The competition Betty and I won via Country Homes is progressing. We have been working on lots of exciting new things for Vintage Scoops. BusinessSmith are doing a great job and are full of wonderful ideas to help Betty and I on our way!!!
Betty has been out and about.she has been invited to lots of birthday parties and she took me to a Land Rover event at the weekend. I was in my element admiring all the beautiful old defenders!!!

What a lovely Bank Holiday weekend......I went to Jimmy's farm with my family and friends. We had a wonderful day!!! my boys were happy to watch the 'Butchery Lesson' and I loved the Butterfly House............. The den making in the woods was great fun too!!!! Jimmy oh Jimmy, we thought he was ever soooo nice!!!! xx

We were in the local newspaper this week!!!! And a rather large photo too xx My boys thought it was very funny, my youngest is taking it in to 'show and tell'

An even more exciting bit of news we are Country Homes and Interiors 'New Country Business of 2010 !!!!!! ' Betty and I have won £6000 worth of help from a company called Business Smith who help and advise small businesses in all aspects.
I cannot really tell you in words what this means to me!!! Oh did I mention that we will be featured in the mag in October!!!!! I cannot quite believe it xxxx

Today was one of those days!!! I drove my little old mini to the wholesalers and as we arrived I noticed rather a lot of smoke coming out from the tyre!!!!! After a call to Mr Helpful AA man and my friend rescuing me from her hubby's garage. I was forced to have a little chill out in the garden.......... ooooooooh it was very lovely!!!! Now time for Betty to take me for a little ride through the villages!!! I love my job !!!! xx

Finding treasure!!!!....

I love it!!!! You never know what you will find, Stony Stratford held a pop up market last Saturday where lots of talented designers showcased their work. There were also stalls full of vintage treasures!!!
I was very happy in my little van serving lots of thrifty shoppers!!! I couldn't help myself, I found myself asking people what they had bought. Everyone was more than happy to let me peep at their new found treasure!

Summer is a great time if you are just getting into buying locally because you can find boot sales, church fetes, jumble sales and so on.....

This beautiful green glass cake plate was my find as I ran round the Handmade and Vintage fair in York House, Stony Stratford as all the stall holders were packing away!!!

Well what a funny weekend!!! Saturday was the coldest day ever!!! I sold knitted ice creams and a bird house. I should of been selling hot chocolate with marshmellows instead of ice cream. I would like to say thank you to the lovely couple who gave me tea and a yummy cornish pasty!! YUM YUM xx

Oh I sooo want a Pashley bike, you might of seen my friend's bike on here the other day. I am dreaming of my own one with a basket for Sid!!!! I'm thinking pale blue with pretty flowers...oh well a girl can dream!!!!! Have a good week my lovely blog friends xx

I am a lucky girl not only do I get to drive a very beautiful ice cream van for a living and wear the most floral frocks you ever did see!!!! I have the lovliest friends.......

We left our little village in Buckinghamshire this evening my lovely friend and I and drove to my other lovely friend's home in Northants where she had a Where the heart is-interior party. Mrs C served us tea in the prettiest cups and saucers and she had even made heart shaped biscuits!!!!! Oh what a little Wednesday treat xx

Well Hello !!!

I am a girl who has bought an old 1973 Bedford cf Ice cream van !!!
It was old, a bit yucky really.....hand painted and well, a bit tired!!!
We painted her in the prettiest shades of blue and cream, decorated her with Cath Kidston oilcloth and hung oodles of pretty bunting and 'Vintage Scoops' was born.

Named her Betty after my Grandma and my Hubby's Nan..... her top speed being 40mph, she takes her time to get anywhere but does it in style.

I sell Beechdean ice cream which is produced and made on a local Buckinghamshire farm, retro flavoued lollies, such as; cider, cherry brandy, lager and lime, strawberry split and I serve a yummy 99...... oh and of course an oyster!!!
You can also buy old fashioned sweets from the jars and yummy drinks in pretty glass bottles such as dandelion and burdock, cloudy lemonade and of course my Grandma's favourite ginger beer!!!!!

For something a bit special book me for your event, wedding, child's birthday celebration....
